Dustdevils drop series vs. Hilltoppers

Box Score

LAREDO, Texas – A battle between the Heartland Conference's second and third placed teams shook up the standings on Saturday at Dustdevils Field. Entering the three-game series, Texas A&M International (18-28, 9-9 Heartland) stood as the conference's No. 2 seed and St. Edward's (27-20, 11-10 Heartland) as the No. 3. St. Edward's and TAMIU split Friday's doubleheader and the Hilltoppers stole a 2-1 eight-inning victory on Saturday to overtake the Dustdevils and flip flop the standings.

Only the league's top four teams will qualify for the Heartland Conference Tournament, which is to be hosted by the regular season's top finisher. The Dustdevils have only six games left in the season and all are on the road – where TAMIU holds a 3-11 record. They will travel to No. 5 St. Mary's (40-7, 15-0 Heartland) for three games on April 17-18 and close the season with three games at Oklahoma Christian.

On Saturday, the game stood scoreless until the sixth inning, when SEU plated the first run off a RBI double. With just two chances left to extend the game, it wasn't until the final half inning that the home team scored.

Brenda Parnin steamed a single to right field, plating Desiree Ramos. The frame began as Ramos reached on a one-out single to left field. She advanced to third base after Cassie Garcia reached on a Hilltoppers error, putting runners on the corners. Krissy Sardelich entered as a pinch runner for Garcia. The bases were then loaded when Anna Parnin was struck by a pitch. Brenda Parnin then placed her single to score Ramos – all of the offense coming with an out.

With the game tied, SEU opened the first extra inning with a single, a groundout and another single to eventually see runners on second and third base with one out. A misplay by TAMIU's infield saw the winning run score before a double play ended the frame. The Dustdevils went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth to end the game.

Starting pitcher Kyndall Reaves (6-9) took the loss, throwing the complete eight innings with two strike outs, a walk and two runs allowed – one earned – off seven hits. Sarah Debrow (14-9) took the victory with a complete-game five-hitter, striking out 10 and walking just two. She allowed just the one run.

Brenda Parnin led the Dustdevils, going 3-for-4 with the only RBI. Chelsea Capello went 1-for-3 and Ramos went 1-for-4 with the only run. Brittany Mussett and Reaves drew the only walks, while Capello and Anna Parnin were plunked to take a base. Cassandra De Leon did lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance a runner.

Saturday stood as Senior Day for the Dustdevils. Six seniors were honored during a pregame ceremony by head coach Scott Libby, assistant coach Arek Zambanini, director of athletics Griz Zimmermann and each senior's family. The team honored outfielder Esmeralda Gonzalez, pitcher and outfielder Reaves, infielder Victoria Gomez, first base player Garcia, utility player Desiree Ortiz and utility player Desiree Ramos.
