Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – An unorthodox ending handed Texas A&M International its second consecutive one-run loss. The Dustdevils and St. Mary's entered the seventh and final inning tied at one, but two consecutive singles, an intentional walk and a batter hit by a pitch pushed across StMU's winning run in the 2-1 walk-off victory.
Starting pitcher Sarah Johnson fell to 6-10 for the year after throwing six complete innings with eight hits and two runs allowed. She struck out two and didn't walk any Rattler batters. Emily Brittain improved to 23-4 for the Rattlers.
TAMIU scored its only run in the second inning when Kyndall Reaves plated Mariena Gallardo with an infield ground out. Reaves went 0-for-2 with the team's only RBI and Gallardo went 1-for-3 with the only run.
Chelsea Capello swung the hottest bat, recording three of the Dustdevils' five hits. She went 3-for-4. Desiree Ramos went 1-for-2. Cassie De Leon, Reaves and Ramos each drew walks, while De Leon stole a base afterward.
With the loss, TAMIU remains (18-31, 9-11 Heartland Conference) in third place in the Heartland Conference and three games up on fourth place Newman (15-24, 6-11 Heartland). The Dustdevils need one win to clinch a postseason tournament berth.
Only the league's top four teams will qualify for the Heartland Conference Tournament, which is to be hosted by the regular season's top finisher. The Dustdevils have only six games left in the season and all are on the road – where TAMIU holds a 3-11 record. They again face No. 5 St. Mary's (40-7, 15-0 Heartland) for a doubleheader on April 18 and close the season with three games at Oklahoma Christian.
