TAMIU Opens Heartland Tournament

Dustdevils fall in first-round game

Box Score

St. Edward's shutout Texas A&M International 9-0 on the opening day of the 2014 Heartland Conference Softball Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Park at St. Mary's University in San Antonio.  The game ended after five innings due to the Heartland Conference's 8-run rule.

SEU (32-22) got all of the offense it would need with a six-run second inning off of TAMIU (19-35) starter Kyndall Reaves.  The Hilltopper scoring in that frame started with a RBI triple to left center field by Faith Roberts and ended with a 2-RBI line drive double by Kendall Lucas that landed just inside the left field chalk line.

TAMIU was limited to one hit in the game against Hilltopper starter Sarah Debrow.  Chelsea Capello's third inning single placed runners on first and second with two outs but the threat ended when Cassie DeLeon struck out swinging.

Debrow (18-10) earned the complete game win for SEU, striking out seven and allowing only one walk.  Reaves (6-12) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings in the circle.  Mariena Gallardo allowed three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of relief work.

TAMIU will return to tournament action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against the loser of today's second game between top-seeded St. Mary's and fourth seeded UT-Permian Basin.
