Lock-down defense earns TAMIU 3-0 Heartland Conference victory over STMU

LAREDO, Texas (October 8, 2016) -  The Texas A&M International University Men's Soccer team kicked off a home stand against St. Mary's on Saturday. The Dustdevils earned a 3-0 victory, moving to 4-7 overall (3-5 HC).

A strong defensive effort, coupled with three Dustdevil goals led TAMIU to a key Heartland Conference victory on Saturday. TAMIU held STMU to four shots on goal through 90 minutes of play.

Funcia Kenneh put TAMIU on the board in the ninth minute of play. Michael Iskander played a ball into the box, allowing Kenneh to work around a defender and bury a five yard shot.

TAMIU would hold a one-goal advantage through the first 45 minutes of play.

The Dustdevils extended the lead early in the second half. Aaron Zuniga found the back of the net in the 46th minute. Ryan Hodgson crossed a ball into the box where Zuniga put a head on the ball, burying the shot into the lower left corner.

TAMIU would hold a two-goal advantage through the next 38 minutes of play. Rafael Montabes would add to the Dustdevil lead in the 84th minute, finding the net on a ball played from Alan Rivera

The Dustdevils would out-shoot the Rattlers 13-11 (11-4 on goal). Roberto Molina played all 90 minutes in net, earning his second shutout of the season. Molina saved four shots and earned his third win.

Head Coach Claudio Arias commented after the game, "We were terrific at defending together and were able to finish the opportunities we had. Congratulations to our boys for working together on this victory."

The Dustdevils continue play at home on October 13. Thursday's game is the annual Domestic Violence Awareness game which benefits the Kristine Meza Foundation. TAMIU will take on Lubbock Christian. Play is set to begin at 7:30pm CST at the TAMIU Soccer Complex.
