LAREDO, Texas (March 11, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Softball team opened Heartland Conference play on Saturday. The Dustdevils hosted Newman University, taking a 2-5 loss in game one and winning game two 5-2. TAMIU moves to 6-12 overall (1-1 Heartland Conference).
Game 1: TAMIU 2 - NU 5
Newman struck first in game one, plating three first inning runs. The Jets would extend the lead to four in the fourth with a lone run.
TAMIU would bring the game within two runs in the bottom of the fourth with two runs.
Erika Sanchez sent a single to left, scoring
Brenda Parnin. An errant throw from the outfield allowed
Robi Kami to score from second. Sanchez would reach second on the play.
Newman added a fifth run in the fifth, pushing the lead to three runs. Neither team would plate a run in the final two innings of play.
Sara Caterson took the loss in the circle. Caterson tossed seven innings, striking out two Jets.
Game 2: TAMIU 5 - NU 2
Brenda Parnin put TAMIU ahead early in game two. Parnin launched a two-run homerun in the fist inning, scoring
Cassie Cannon.
TAMIU would hold the advantage until Newman put up a pair of runs in the third, bringing the game even at two.
Robi Kami put TAMIU back on top in the bottom of the third with a two RBI single to right field.
Brenda Parnin and
Taylor Vines scored on the single.
TAMIU pushed the lead to three after
Krystal Perez scored on a bases loaded walk.
Delainy Thompson held the Jets to just two runs over seven innings of work. Thompson picked up her third win of the season, striking out eight Newman batters.
