COMMERCE, Texas (March 21, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Softball team took on Texas A&M Commerce in a Tuesday twin bill. TAMIU picked up an 8-6 win in game one, falling 2-10 in game two. The Dustdevils move to 8-17 overall.
Game 1; TAMIU 8 - TAMUC 6
Cassie Cannon and
Alyssa Acuna put TAMIU on the board early in the first game on Tuesday. Cannon led off the ballgame with solo homerun to left field, putting TAMIU up 1-0. Three batters later, Acuna sent a long ball over the left field fence, giving TAMIU the 2-0 lead.
The Lions would even the game at two in the third behind a two-run homerun. After three innings, the teams were deadlocked at two.
Brandi Giles would put TAMIU ahead 3-2 after doubling down the left field line, scoring
Sara Caterson.
Acuna gave the Dustdevils a three-run advantage, blasting her second homerun of the day in the fifth. Acuna's second homerun came with
Brenda Parnin on base, allowing TAMIU to jump ahead 5-2.
The Lions would pick up two runs in the fifth, bringing the game within a run for the second time.
Erika Sanchez drove in Parnin and Cannon in the seventh on an RBI single, pushing the Dustdevil lead to 7-4.
Sara Caterson picked up an RBI and a third Dustdevil run, driving in Acuna.
Despite a two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh, the Dustdevils held off the Lion's rally.
Caterson tossed seven innings in the circle, moving to 3-3 with the win. Caterson struck out four Lions in the game.
Game 2: TAMIU 2 - TAMUC 10
TAMIU was unable to overcome an early deficit in game two. The Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Taylor Vines lined out to third in the third inning but an error on the third baseman allowed
Samantha Edmiston to score. Through three innings TAMIU trailed 1-4.
The Lions picked up a pair of runs before TAMIU would bring their second run across in the sixth inning.
Robi Kami would bring TAMIU within four after scoring on an errant throw from the catcher.
The game ended in the sixth inning after the Lions plated four runs in the sixth, pushing the lead to eight.
Delainy Thompson fell to 4-8 after tossing three innings in the circle. Thompson picked up five strikeouts in the loss.
Tori Carrion tossed the final two and two thirds innings for TAMIU.
