LAREDO, Texas (March 24, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Softball team opened a three game Heartland Conference series with Oklahoma Christian on Friday. TAMIU was dealt a 3-5 loss in game one. The Dustdevils came back to win game two 2-1. TAMIU moves to 9-18 overall (3-2 Heartland Conference).
Game 1: TAMIU 3 - OC 5 (11 Innings)
The Dustdevils would take advantage of Eagle mistakes early in game one. The Dustdevils plated two runs without recording a hit through six innings of play.
Alyssa Acuna would score the first run of the ballgame in the second inning. Acuna tagged from second after
Brandi Giles flew out to right field, an errant throw allowed Acuna to advance home, putting TAMIU up 1-0.
A wild pitch in the third allowed
Cassie Cannon to score from third for TAMIU's second run of the afternoon.
The Eagles would plate the next three runs, including a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
Brenda Parnin would bring the game even in the bottom of the inning after driving in
Taylor Vines on an RBI single to center field.
The teams would play scoreless ball until OC managed two runs in the top of the 11th inning.
Sara Caterson tossed six innings in the circle, striking out four.
Tori Carrion would relieve Caterson in the seventh, tossing two and a third scoreless innings.
Delainy Thompson was the third Dustdevil to take the circle in game one. Thompson tossed two and two thirds innings in the circle, striking out a pair of Eagles. Thompson moves to 4-9 with the loss.
Game 2:
TAMIU and OC would play a neck to neck ballgame in game two. Extra innings were forced again, with TAMIU coming out on top in the second matchup.
The Dustdevils struck first in the fifth inning after
Cassie Cannon doubled to right center.
Sara Caterson would come around to score on the play, giving the Dustdevils a 1-0 lead.
An Eagle solo homerun in the sixth brought the game even with just an inning remaining. The teams would play a scoreless two innings before
Amanda Hinajosa delivered the winning run for TAMIU.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth Hinajosa delivered a bases loaded RBI single as the Dustdevils walked off on the Eagles, earning a Friday split.
Delainy Thompson went the distance in the circle, tossing eight innings. Thompson picked up five strikeouts, moving to 5-9 with the win.
