GOODWELL, Oklahoma (April 21, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University Softball team took on Oklahoma Panhandle State University in a doubleheader on Friday. TAMIU downed the Aggies 12-1 in game one and 7-4 in game two. The Dustdevils improve to 16-29 overall (10-7 Heartland Conference).
Game 1: TAMIU 12 – OPSU 1
The Dustdevils jumped out to an early lead in game one, aided by at least one run in each of the first five innings.
Erika Sanchez put TAMIU on the board in the first inning with an RBI single up the middle.
Cassie Cannon came around to score on the play.
Brenda Parnin put TAMIU ahead 2-0 with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring
Robi Kami.
Alyssa Acuna extended the lead to four with an 2 RBI single scoring Parnin and
Taylor Vines.
Kami added a fifth Dustdevil run, driving in
Avianna Galvan in the third. Sanchez drove home Cannon in the fourth to put TAMIU ahead 6-0.
OPSU pushed across their first run of the ballgame in the fourth, cutting the lead to five.
The Dustdevils would extend the lead to six again in the fifth inning after Parnin drove in
Samantha Edmiston on an RBI single to centerfield.
TAMIU would seal the deal in the seventh, plating five runs. Acuna picked up an RBI after drawing a bases loaded walk. Sanchez would pick up a pair of RBI's after driving in Cannon and Edmiston on an RBI double, opening a 10-1 lead. Sanchez and Acuna would come around to score after the Aggies threw the ball away off the bat of
Amanda Hinajosa.
Delainy Thompson went the distance, tossing seven innings in the circle. Thompson scattered five hits and struck out six, improving to 10-13.
Game 2: TAMIU 7 – OPSU 4
After being held scoreless through the first two frames, TAMIU picked up three runs in the third inning. Acuna drove in
Krystal Perez with an RBI single to right center. Sanchez followed with an RBI single, bringing Cannon around to score. The third Dustdevil run came off the bat of
Sara Caterson, driving home Acuna on a groundout.
OPSU cut the lead to two with a run in the bottom of the third.
TAMIU added a run in the sixth after Kami drove home Jennelle Rodriguez on an RBI single.
The Aggies tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with three runs.
The Dustdevils responded with three runs in the top of the seventh. Cannon led off the inning with a solo homerun before Caterson reached on error, scoring Sanchez.
Brandi Giles put TAMIU up 7-4 with a sacrifice fly, scoring Caterson.
TAMIU set down the Aggies in the seventh, picking up their second win of the day.
Caterson tossed a complete game in the circle. Caterson struck out three Aggies, picking up her fifth win.
