Dustdevils Drop a Pair to Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas (February 20, 2018) – Cassie Cannon went 5-of-8 from the plate for the Texas A&M International University softball team as they dropped both games of a doubleheader to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field. The losses drop the Dustdevils to 3-15 overall with the Javelinas improving to 5-7.
 
The Dustdevils open up Heartland Conference play on Friday, Feb. 23, at home with a doubleheader against the Jets of Newman. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.  A link for live stats can be found at GoDustdevils.com under the softball schedule page.

Cannon picked up her second hit of the game in the top of the third with a single to right with a Melanie Gamboa sac bunt moving her to third. Following a fly out from Schofield, Cannon came around to score on a Paul single down the third base line.  
 
The Javelinas took the lead 2-1 in the fourth on a two-run home run from Anastasia Leibas after a Haley Boyett was hit by a pitch to start the bottom half of the inning. TAMIU responded in the top half of the fifth inning starting with Cannon's third hit of the game. Following a ground out by Gamboa, Schofield singled to left putting runners on corners with one out. Paul once again came up big at the plate with a single to plate Cannon to tie the game at 2-all. Erika Sanchez loaded the bases with two outs and were unable to push any runs on a nice play down the left field line by TAMUK's Alexie Gonzalez.
 
The winning came across the plate for the home team in the bottom half of the sixth on Rachael Longoria's double plating Angelico. The Dustdevils went down in order in the top half of the seventh.
 
Thompson (1-6) went five innings allowing three runs on six hits striking out a season-high nine batters. Lint pitched one inning in relief with one hit and one strike out.

The Dustdevils scored first for the second time in as many games with Cannon reaching base and advancing to third on an error. She would come around to score for the third time in the doubleheader on Schofield's ground out to second. Lindsey Smith singled down the right field line at the next at-bat but Gamboa was thrown out at home to end the threat as the Dustdevils lead 1-0.
 
A Roxy Chapa two-run home run highlighted a five-run bottom half of the first for the Javelinas as they churnced out five hits with TAMIU committing three errors. TAMUK would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead.
 
Caterson (2-2) suffered her first loss in the past three starts giving up seven runs (four earned) on four hits and five walks. Lint made her second appearance in relief in the double header holding the Javelinas scoreless over three innings of work.
