VICTORIA, Texas (February 21, 2018) – The Texas A&M International University Baseball team played its first set of road games on Wednesday. TAMIU took on Houston-Victoria in a doubleheader at Riverside Stadium. The Dustdevils picked up a 4-2 win in game one and a 7-3 win in game two. TAMIU moves to 3-5 overall.
GAME 1: TAMIU 4 – UHV 2
Hugo Mendiola got the nod in game one, tossing six innings for the Dustdevils. Mendiola allowed just one hit in his six innings of work. Two runs would score, one being unearned while Mendiola fanned two batters.
Coleman Butler would relieve Mendiola in the seventh, picking up the save in a scoreless inning of work.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Cabezas for two: Alex Cabezas drove in a pair of runs in game one, driving in
Kobrey Garcia and
Mario Ramirez on an RBI single in the third.
Early work: The Dustdevils would score all four runs in the first three frames of game one. The Jaguars would plate a run in the fourth and fifth, cutting the lead to two.
Hot bats: The Dustdevils picked up a pair of 2-3 performances at the plate.
Daniel Espinosa and
Mathew Trevino each picked up a pair of hits in the game and both came across the plate once.
GAME 2: TAMIU 7 – UHV 3
Eric Cleveland made his Dustdevil and NCAA debut on Wednesday. Cleveland would toss three innings, fanning three Jaguars in the process.
Justin Diaz would relieve Cleveland, allowing just two hits in three innings of work.
Mark Trimble tossed the final frame in the win.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Old number 2: The Dustdevils picked up six runs in the second inning of game two. After falling behind 0-1 after an inning, TAMIU took a commanding 6-1 lead.
And it rained, and rained, and rained: The Dustdevils battled the Jaguars and the weather on Wednesday night. Temperatures never broke 50 degrees and rain fell for the majority of both games. The weather played havoc on fielders as the teams combined for seven errors on the day. The Dustdevils won the fielding battle as well as UHV accounted for five of seven errors.
Gonzalez for three: Ricky Gonzalez went 3-4 at the plate in game two, picking up a double, a run, and an RBI.
Everyone gets a run: Seven Dustdevils crossed the plate in the game two win. While nobody scored twice, seven of the nine starters crossed the plate.
