Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader To St. Mary’s

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International baseball (6-10) dropped a non-conference doubleheader to St. Mary's (11-8) on Friday.

GAME 1 - St. Mary's 13 TAMIU 5

The Dustdevils jumped on the board early in the bottom of the first, as Andrew Holsey led off with a no-doubter to left field on the second pitch he saw to give TAMIU an early 1-0 lead.

However, the Rattler bats would come alive in the third for four runs. A two-RBI double to brought in the first two runs. A sacrifice bunt would bring in the third run, with a RBI single bringing in the fourth giving them a 4-2 lead.

The Dustdevils got two runs back in the bottom half. An RBI double by Nate Campos brought in Daniel Espinoza, and a RBI single from Matthew Villanueva brought in Campos to cut the deficit to 4-3.

In the top of the fourth, St. Mary's pushed their lead out to 9-3. A grand slam brought in four runs, with a solo shot later in the inning scoring the fifth run. They would add three more runs in the fifth with two back-to-back RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.

TAMIU cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Villanueva drove in Espinoza with a RBI single. With the bases loaded, Anthony Handel was plunked which brought in Campos to cut the lead to 12-5.

The Rattlers got one final run in the seventh off a RBI single to take the 13-5 win.

Zach De La Pena (4-2, 5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 7 SO) earned the win. Hugo Mendiola (0-3, 3.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.

GAME 2 - St. Mary's 12 TAMIU 11

After both starters worked scoreless first innings, St. Mary's broke out for three runs in the second. A leadoff solo home run and two RBI ground outs netted the runs for the Rattlers. They added two insurance runs in the third of a two-RBI single, giving them an early 5-0 lead.

The Dustdevils got the board in the bottom of the third as Holsey drove in Hunter Trinidad with a sacrifice fly to left, cutting the lead to 5-1.

Another solo home run for St. Mary's in the fourth pushed the lead back out to 6-1.

The Dustdevil offense started to wake up in the fifth as Hector Gonzalez scored on an E6. Campos drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Handel, and a sacrifice fly by Matthew Rosales brought in Jorge Napoles to pull within two runs at 6-4.

The Rattlers counterpunched in the sixth, scoring four runs and pushing the lead to 10-4. A bases loaded walk and hit batter drove in two runs, with a two-RBI single bringing home the other two runs.

A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth by Espinoza would score Gonzalez to cut the lead to 10-5. However, St. Mary's would get the run back in the seventh off a sacrifice bunt. TAMIU added another run the bottom half as Rosales went yard, brining the deficit once again back to five at 11-6. Again the Rattlers would counter in the eighth with a RBI fielder's choice to go back up 12-6.

In the bottom of the bottom of the eighth, Rosales would drop another bomb, this time a three-run round tripper cutting the lead to 12-10.

Down two runs in their last at bat, TAMIU attempted to rally with the bases loaded and only one out. They pulled within one run as Napoles brought home Gonzales on a long sacrifice fly to right field. Unfortunately, the comeback bid would come up short as Espinoza would go down swinging in the next at bat to give St. Mary's the 12-11 victory.

Connor Schmidt (2-1, 5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO) earned the win, with Johnny Panatex (1) earning his first save of the season. Ruben Solis (0-4, 4.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.

The Dustdevils will look to split the series tomorrow as both teams face off again in another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
