LAREDO, Texas — Texas Woman's University completed a Sunday doubleheader sweep over Texas A&M International, earning a 2-0 victory in Game 1 before taking the nightcap 4-1 at Dustdevil Softball Field.
Game 1: Texas Woman's 2, TAMIU 0
The opener was a pitcher's duel, but the Pioneers capitalized on timely hitting to edge the Dustdevils 2-0.
Texas Woman's broke through in the third inning when Madison Lux delivered an RBI single to score Marissa Espinoza for the game's first run. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI double from Espinoza to extend the lead to 2-0.
TAMIU was limited to just two hits in the contest — singles from Sessy Moreno and Damaris Saldivar — while striking out 12 times.
Kylie Goad went the distance in the circle for the Dustdevils, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out eight in seven innings.
Game 2: Texas Woman's 4, TAMIU 1
In Game 2, Texas Woman's used a three-run middle stretch to pull away and complete the sweep.
The Pioneers plated two runs in the third inning and extended the lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Madison Lux before Tamia Cherry added a solo home run in the sixth to make it 4-0.
TAMIU broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Queenandra Dunn delivered an RBI single to score Austyn Marriage, but the rally was cut short by a game-ending double play.
The Dustdevils recorded eight hits in the second contest, with Kennedy Griego going 2-for-3 and Isabella Perez adding two hits. Dunn finished with the team's lone RBI.
Nevaeh Herrera took the loss in Game 2 after allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings.
Texas A&M International will look to bounce back in its next Lone Star Conference matchup.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Kennedy Griego is a senior 3rd baseman for Texas A&M International University and is currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. A native of Covina, CA, Kennedy is the daughter of Rodney Griego and Teresa Flynn, and was born on November 2, 2004.
Griego paced the Dustdevil offense in Game 2, going 2-for-3 at the plate while helping spark TAMIU's late-inning rally attempt. The senior third baseman consistently put the ball in play and provided defensive stability on the corner, leading the team with multiple hits in the nightcap.
