LAREDO, Texas (February 4, 2018) – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils scored three runs on a home run by
Lindsey Smith in the final inning but it wasn't enough as they lost 6-3 to Central Oklahoma in the final game of the TownePlace Suites by Marriott TAMIU Spring Classic in Laredo. The loss drops the Dustdevils to 1-4 on the season while the Bronchos improve to 4-2.
The Dustdevils hit the road for the first time this season next week when they take part in the ASU George McCorkle Challenge presented by Bahlman Cleaners in San Angelo, Texas.
Neither team recorded a hit in the first three innings before UCO's Morgan Heard and JoBi Heath singled to start the top of the fourth. Heath would come around to score on the next at-bat on an Allie Eicher single to left. Following the first out of the inning on a ground ball by Lexy Dobson, Halley Randolph a Carli would each drove in a run to make it 3-0 in favor of UCO.
The Dustdevils threatened to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning with
Maddison Schofield singling down the third base line before reaching second when
Erika Sanchez was hit by a pitch.
Maya Paul executed a perfect sac bunt to move the runners to second and third before Acuña grounded out a the Dustdevils stranded two runners.
The Bronchos added some insurance runs in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases with noe outs before Eicher drive in two runs on a grounder that bounced around the infield. A wild pitch allowed Heath to reach third before she came around to score on a sac fly making it 4-0 for UCO.
Melaine Gamboa got the rally started in the bottom of the seventh with two outs as the freshman singled up the middle on a 1-2 pitch. Gamboa advanced to second on the next pitch as Casady Webb was unable to handle a hard-hit ball from Cannon putting two Dustdevils aboard. Smith made them pay for the second time in three games as the Bullhead City, Ariz. Product launched the first pitch of the at-bat over the center field wall making it 6-3.
Lint (0-1) registered her first career complete game in the loss allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits walking two batters.
