SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 9, 2018) – Texas A&M International Softball had No. 2 Angelo State on the ropes before falling to the reigning NCAA Division II South Central Region Champions 5-4 on Thursday afternoon at the George & Ola McCorkle Challenge in San Angelo, Texas. The Dustdevils fell to Adams State earlier in the day before dropping a pair to the highly ranked Rambelles in the afternoon as they played three games in a single day for the first time since Feb. 15, 2013.
The Dustdevils will return to action tomorrow starting with a rematch against the Grizzlies at 10 a.m. before taking on the Panthers of Florida Tech at 4:15 p.m. Links for live stats and video can be found at GoDustdevils.com at the softball schedule page.
Adams State 4 TAMIU 1
Cassie Cannon got things started for the Dustdevils in the bottom of the first with a single to left field before advancing to second on a grounder to the short stop from
Sumer Woodson. The senior centerfielder would come around to score on a two-out single through the right side by
Maddison Schofield giving TAMIU an early 1-0 lead.
The Grizzlies would tie the game at 1-all in the top half of the third inning as Angel Micciulli reached base on a two-out single to the left side of the infield. Tyler Hays would triple to center at the next at-bat to plate Micciulli making it 1-1. ASC would add another the following an inning as Shelby Hasking started the inning with a walk. Alexis Martinez came on as a pinch runner where she reached third on a sac bunt and stolen base before coming around to score as Hannah Wirtjes grounded out to second.
The Dustdevils looked to get back into the game in the bottom half of the fifth when
Brandi Giles lead off with a single down the first base line. Pinch runner
Amanda Hinojosa stole second before
Alyssa Soneff walked on six pitches to put runners on first and second with no outs. Hinojosa made her way to third on a fielder's choice that saw Cannon reach base before stealing second base with two outs. Woodson was unable to put a ball in play as the Dustdevils were down 2-1 heading into the sixth.
ASC added to their lead in the sixth as Stephanie Huff and Haskins earned back-to-walks. Huff would come around to score on an error by
Brandi Giles on a hard hit ball form Wirtjes while Haskins scored on a single up the middle to make it 4-1.
Lint (0-2) went the full seven innings giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and six walks while tying a caeer-high in strikeouts with three.
#2 Angelo State 5 TAMIU 4
The Dustdevils came close to taking a lead in the top of the second after
Maddison Schofield lead off with a single up the middle. The junior stole second following a fly out by
Maya Paul before an
Alyssa Acuna single to right put runners on the corners with one out. Acuna would steal second on the next pitch but both runners were stranded as Angelo State's Brandy Marlett recorded back-to-back outs to end the threat.
The Rambelles would take the lead in the bottom half of the inning following a leadoff walk by Danae Bina. Following a flied out to center, Bina would steal second on a
Delainy Thompson strikeout before coming around to score as Taylor Fogle doubled to left field making it 1-0 in favor of the Rambelles.
Maya Paul started the top of the fourth with a walk on five pitches as an Acuna moved her safely over to second on a sac bunt. Paul would score on the next at-bat as a throwing error on a hit from
Robi Kami plated the freshman making it 1-1. ASU responded in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead as Rocha hit a solo shot over the right field fence on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Cannon recorded her second double of the season on the second pitch of the top of the fifth inning as the ball bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double. The Dustdevils had two runners in scoring position with no outs before pinch hitter
Jenelle Rodriguez singled up the middle before stealing second.
Lindsey Smith loaded the bases as she reached on a fielder's choice. Schofield fly ball was deep enough to plate Cannon and advance Rodriguez and Smith up a base. Acuna came up big with two outs doubling to right field to clear the bases and give TAMIU 5-2 lead.
Much like the inning before, the Rambelles responded in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead. Madison Greenwell and Bailey Wallace recorded back-to-back singles after Brooke Mangold was caught stealing to put runners at first and second with one out. Courtney Barnhill then proceeded to clear the bases with her second home run of the season taking a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right center.
Melanie Gamboa continued the strong start to her freshman campaign with a one-out double in the sixth. Cannon registered her second walk of the game before both runners advanced a base on a sac bunt by
Samantha Edmiston. Smith nearly gave the Dustdevils the lead but her hard-hit ball was corralled by the second basemen to end the threat.
Thompson (1-2) went the distance for the 51
st time in her career allowing five runs on seven hits striking out two batters.

2 Angelo State 10 TAMIU 0 (5 innings)
The Dustdevils fell behind 5-0 in the first inning as Wallace drove in Greenwell following a leadoff double to left center. Wallace would come around to score on an error before Rocha would clear the bases with a home to right center. The Rambelles would add four more runs in the next inning as Rocha picked up her second homer of the game making it 9-0 after three complete in San Angelo.
Rocha continued her career night in the bottom of the fourth with a double to left field to plate Barnhill putting the home team up 10-0.
Melanie Gamboa registered one of the Dustdevils's two hits in the top of the fifth on the first pitch of the at-bat. She would get around to third following an error on a ball hit from
Erika Sanchez but she was unable to come around to score as TAMIU suffered their first five inning loss of the season.
Tori Carrion (0-2) gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits while Lint and
Miranda Martinez gave up five runs on eight hits in relief.
