Dustdevils Defeat OC in Edmond for First Time in Program History, Split Doubleheader

EDMOND, Okla. (March 1, 2018) – Maddison Schofield drove in the game winning run in the top of the seventh as Texas A&M International University softball defeated Oklahoma Christian in Edmond for the first time in program history in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader at Tom Heath Field. The junior drove in Cassie Cannon to give the Dustdevils a 5-4 lead ending a six game road losing streak to the Eagles. They were unable to carry the momentum over to the second game falling 5-3 in seven innings.
 
The Dustdevils finish the four-game road trip on Saturday, March 3, with a doubleheader at Rogers State. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
 
TAMIU 5, Oklahoma Christian 4
Oklahoma Christian lead 2-0 after three innings with both scores coming as a result of Dustevil errors. Maddison Schofield got the rally started for TAMIU in the top of the fourth reaching base when she was hit by a pitch. Maya Paul followed that up with a single to third before both runners moved over to second and third on a wild pitch. Alyssa Acuna's single up the middle plated Schofield with Paul coming around to score on a throwing error tying it at 2-all. Erika Sanchez's single continued the momentum putting runners on first and third with one out. Following a hard hit ground out by Brandi Giles, Samantha Edmiston double to left center to clear the bases and give the Dustdevils a 4-2 lead.
 
The Eagles would get one back in the bottom half of the inning after a leadoff triple from Sheridan Fuller before tying it in the sixth. Cassie Cannnon came up huge in the top of the seventh for the Dustdevils with a one out double to right field. She advanced to third on Melanie Gamboa's ground out to second. For the second game in a row, Schofield provided the game winning hit as the junior ground out to the middle of the infield was enough to plate Cannon and give TAMIU a 5-4 lead.
 
Melanie Lint (2-5) picked up the win in relief going four innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out two including the final out of the game.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-out single up the middle by Kaylie Upton. It was a 1-1 game in the top of the of third when Edmiston scored from second on a fielder's choice hit to short by Gamboa. The Dustdevils came close to taking the lead in the next inning but Paul was left stranded on third after a leadoff double.
 
Errors came back to haunt TAMIU in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles retook the lead scoring three runs, two of which coming on a two-out triple from Hunter Strickland. Like they had done all day, the Dustdevils responded in the next inning scoring two runs making it a 4-3 game. Edmiston reached base on a fielder's choice before advancing to third on a single through the right side by Cannon. Both runners came around to score on Gamboa's single down the left field line making it a one run game. OC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Madison Nordyke single up the middle.
 
Delainy Thompson (2-7) was credited with the loss going four inning giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out one. Tori Carrion made an appearance going 1 and 2/3 innings striking out two.
