Thompson Ties a Pair of School Records, Dustdevils Sweep Friday Doubleheader Against OC

LAREDO, Texas (March 16, 2018) – Delainy Thompson tied a pair of program records on Friday afternoon as Texas A&M International University softball swept a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian on a beautiful day in Laredo. Thompson making her program-best 84th career start hurled her seventh shutouts to tie another record as the Dustdevils improved to 12-21 overall and 9-6 in Heartland Conference play.

The Dustdevil and Eagles will finish their three-game series on Saturday, March 17. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.

TAMIU 3, Oklahoma Christian 0
Delainy Thompson came out dealing in the circle allowing one hit through the first three innings before Melanie Gamboa's single up to left field gave the Dustdevils a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Samantha Edmiston led off the inning with a single to left moving over to second on her fourth stolen base of the season. She advanced to third on a groundout to second before coming around to score on Gamboa's single on a full count.

Thompson continued her dominance over OC setting them down in order in the fourth and fifth innings. The Dustdevils would get insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a two-run home run by Maya Paul. Cassie Cannon started the inning off with a walk reaching second on a fielder's choice. Following the second out of the inning, Paul connected on her first career home run taking the 2-2 offering just over the fence in center field.

Thompson (5-8) recorded the seventh shutout of her career and first of the season allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three in record-tying 84th career start.

The Eagles came out on the front foot in the second game but a big defensive by Paul stopped them from gaining an early advantage. With runners on first and third and one out, OC's Kayla Eichler hit a hard grounder to the freshman third baseman who gunned out Sheridan Fuller on a play at the plate.

The Dustdevils registered their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth on ball hit through the right side by Paul. She would steal her 13th base of the season on the next pitch and come around to score on single by Edmiston. Edmiston would later score in the inning on a wild pitch after back-to-back walks by Alyssa Acuna and Brandi Giles loaded the bases.  OC tied the game at 2-all in the top of the sixth on two hits and one error.

Giles came up huge in the bottom of the seventh driving in the winning run on a 1-1 pitch to give the Dustdevils a doubleheader sweep of the Eagles. Sara Caterson led off the inning with an eight pitch walk before being replaced by pinch runner Krystal Perez. Robi Kami was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat putting runners on first and second with no outs. Giles after an unsuccessful bunt attempt on the first pitch proceeded to fake out the OC infielder and pulled her bat back at the last second before sending the pitch past the feet of Perez for the walk off win.

Caterson her best start since last season's Heartland Conference Tournament going 5.0 innings giving up no runs on six hits with one strikeout. Melanie Lint (5-6) was credited with the win giving up two runs (no earned) on two hits and three walks.
