Dustdevils Welcome Lady Chaps to Laredo for Midweek Doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas (March 26, 2018) –
Texas A&M International University Softball will play 14 of its final 19 games at the friendly confines of Dustdevil Field starting with a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27, against the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian. It will be the first meeting for the two programs this year after LCU won the series in 2017.

A LOOK AT THE DUSTDEVILS
The Dustdevils are 13-24 on the season and 10-9 in Heartland Conference play after ending a five-game losing streak to St. Mary's in the final game of the series on Saturday. Head coach Scott Libby has got to be happy with what he has seen from his pitching staff as he enters Tuesday's games two wins short of 225 for his career.
 
Hitting
Maya Paul continues to lead the Dustdevil offense as the freshman ranks first on the team in batting average, multiple hit games and stolen bases. The San Antonio native is hitting .333 with 34 hits, eight doubles and one home run for 12 runs batted in while going 14-for-15 on stolen base attempts. She has nine game with two or more hits including two games with three hits. Cassie Cannon found her groove this past weekend against StMU going 3-for-10 from the plate while scoring three of the Dustdevils six runs. She also recorded a hit in back-to-back games for the first time since March 1. Maddison Schofield is the main beneficiary of Cannon getting on base as the junior has driven in a team-high 20 runs including the go-ahead run on Saturday. For the season, she is hitting .284 with five double and two home runs and 12 runs scored.
 
Pitching
Melanie Lint is coming off one of the best performances by a freshman in program history in the past couple of years as the right-hander held Heartland Conference leaders St. Mary's to three hits en route to her first career complete game shutout. The Johnstown, Pa. product is 6-7 on the season with a team-best 2.74 ERA in 92.0 innings of work with 35 strikeouts. Delainy Thompson moved into first place in games started last Friday and is four appearances short of becoming the third Dustdevil with 100 or more during a career. On the season, the senior is 5-10 with a 3.10 ERA allowing 53 runs (41 earned) on 89 hits with a team-high 51 strikeouts. Sara Caterson has really found her groove in the circle as the junior hasn't allowed more than two runs in her last two starts. She pitched five scoreless against Oklahoma Christian two weeks ago in a Dustdevils victory.
 
A LOOK AT THE LADY CHAPS
The Lady Chaps enter Tuesday's doubleheader 19-9 overall and 8-6 in Heartland Conference having won a season-high five straight games. Daren Hays' squad leads the conference in batting average (.289), slugging percentage (.490) and on-base percentage (.399) while ranking in the top three in four other categories.
 
Hitting
KK Lopez-Lui leads the Heartland Conference in batting average as the  junior is hitting .407 with 22 hits, four doubles and three home runs driving in 18 runs. She has been on fire at the plate over the past five games going 13 for her last 16 driving in 12 runs. Lindzi Clemmer has been equally impressive as the junior is hitting .363 with 33 hits, five doubles, one triple and nine home runs with 25 RBIs. She had a monster performance against Eastern New Mexico last weekend going 5-for-8 with a triple and home run to drive in four runs. Morgan Defour brings the power to the Lady Chaps lineup as the junior leads the team in home runs and RBIs. She is hitting .333 on the season with 20 of her 27 hits going for extra bases including 13 home runs.
 
Pitching
Monique Francois enters Tuesday's doubleheader with a record of 13-3 in the circle and an ERA of 1.83. The 13 wins are tied for the most in the Heartland Conference while she ranks in the top five in ERA. Last week against ENMU, the Lubbock native went 2-0 in eight innings of work. Amber Carlton has started in eight of her 11 appearances this season for a record of 4-2 and ERA of 4.30. She has gone the distance twice this season including complete game shutout against UT Permian Basin on March 6. Clarissa Martinez has also seen extended action in the circle for LCU with three starts and nine appearances where she have given up 17 runs (13 earned) in 23.2 innings of work.
 
THE SERIES
The Dustdevils are 2-11 all-time against Lubbock Christian dating back to April 4, 2014. TAMIU is 2-5 at home against LCU with one of those victories coming on April 28 of last year when Delainy Thompson allowed five hits with three strikeouts in a complete game shutout. In their past two defeats to the Lady Chaps, the Dustdevils were outscored 13-0.
 
THE LAST MEETING
It was the Lady Chaps who took 2-of-3 from the Dustdevils when they last met back on April 28-29 in Laredo. After dropping the first game 7-0, Delainy Thompson held LCU scoreless in TAMIU's 1-0 victory. LCU went on to win the rubber match 6-0 as they combined to hit four home runs.
 
AROUND THE HEARTLAND
The Rattlers of St. Mary's sit atop the Heartland Conference standings with a two-game advantage over second-place Rogers State. Lubbock Christian is third at 8-6 followed closely by Oklahoma Christian and TAMIU. St. Edward's and Newman round out the top seven with three wins apiece in conference play.
 
RECORD WATCH
9 – Cassie Cannon needs more steal to become the first player in program history to steal 10 or more bases twice in a career.
 
96 – Delainy Thompson is four appearances short of becoming the third player in program history with 100 or more appearances in career.
 
152.0 – Sara Caterson needs 1.2 more innings of work in the circle to pass Courtney Smith (2008-09) and move into eight in career innings pitched. Delainy Thompson and her 541.1 innings rank second in that category.
 
554 – Alyssa Acuna's 554 career-at bats are the seventh-most in program history and six short of passing Marienna Gallardo (2012-15) for sixth. The senior also ranks in the top 10 in six different categories.
