Hitting
Maya Paul has been the most consistent Dustdevil at the plate this season with the freshman leading the team in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. thstolen base of the season last week, she became the first player to steal 10 or more bases in back-to-back seasons in program history.
Maddison Schofield has occupied the cleanup spot for most of the season hitting .289 with five doubles and two home runs for a team-high 20 RBIs.
Pitching
Delainy Thompson is coming off the best performance of her four-year career where she threw a no-hitter against Lubbock Christian. The senior is now 6-10 on the season after the historic performance where she lowered her ERA to 2.88. She has allowed 53 runs (41 earned) on 89 hits with a team-high 54 strikeouts.
Melanie Lint is the reigning Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week after throwing her first career shutout a week ago at St. Mary's. She is 6-8 with a 2.98 ERA over 98.2 innings in her first year in Laredo. She has allowed 56 runs (42 earned) on 108 hits and 48 walks while striking 38 batters.
Sara Caterson has also pitched well over her past two starts allowing two runs (two earned) on 11 hits in 10.1 innings pitched.
A LOOK AT THE TEXANNS
Second year head coach Mark Cumpian has his team playing some of the best softball in the nation having won 14 of their last 15 including a pair over #4 Angelo State on the road last weekend. The TexAnns are 32-7 overall and 14-7 in Lone Star Conference play.
Hitting
The TexAnns are hitting .341 as a team with a total of eight players hitting .300 or better. Tanna Huie is one of the top hitters in the Lone Star Conference as the junior is hitting .421 with five doubles, one triple and six home runs while driving in 32 runs. She is a tough out for opposing pitchers as her .654 on-base percentage is second on the team having drawn 11 walks with only 12 strikeouts. Georgia Capell is batting just under .400 for the season going 43-for-108 from the dish with a team-high 12 doubles, one triple and 10 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Pitching
Jordan Withrow is the ace of the staff having gone 18-4 in 26 appearances and 21 starts this season. She has an ERA of 2.31 allowing 55 runs (48 earned) in 145.1 innings pitched with 179 strikeouts. THE SERIES
The Dustdevils are 7-14 all-time against Tarleton State dating back to Feb. 2, 2008. They are 2-6 in games played in Stephenville with their last win coming back on March 16, 2010. TAMIU won two of their first three games on the road but have dropped six straight.
THE LAST MEETING
The two teams faced off on March 13, 2017 with the TexAnns taking both games of the doubleheader in Stephenville. The Dustdevils were outscored 15-1 with
Alyssa Acuna driving in the lone run with a ground out in the top of the sixth of game two.
AROUND THE HEARTLAND
St. Mary's extended their lead atop the conference standings to four games with a doubleheader sweep over St. Edward's last week. Rogers State sits second at 11-6 but dropped two games to third-place Oklahoma Christian in Edmond. Lubbock Christian maintains the fourth position followed closely by the Dustdevils in fifth. St. Edward's and Newman occupy the final two positions with three wins a piece.
A PITCHER'S PARADISE
The Dustdevil pitching staff had an impressive week with
Melanie Lint being named the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week and
Delainy Thompson throwing the program's first no-hitter. Lint became the first TAMIU player to earn weekly accolades for the first time since Krystal De La Cruz did so back in March 2, 2016.
