Cannon, Acuna Power Dustdevils to Program’s First Win in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 27, 2018) Cassie Cannon and Alyssa Acuna both homered as Texas A&M International University defeated Lubbock Christian at PlainsCaptital Field for the first time in program history as they split Friday's doubleheader. Cannon and Acuna drove in six of TAMIU's eight runs as the Dustdevils took game one, 8-5, before falling 4-0 in the doubleheader finale.

The rubber game for the series begins at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Links for live stats and video can be found on the softball schedule page at GoDustdevils.com.

TAMIU 8, Lubbock Christian 5
The Lady Chaps scored a pair of runs in the second and third innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out single to left by Sara Ralston.

The Dustdevils got four runs back in the top of the fifth on Cannon's first career grand slam. Sara Caterson's single through the left side loaded the bases with one out before Cannon got all of a 3-2 pitch to cut the deficit to one. Tori Carrion replaced Caterson in the circle retiring all three Lady Chaps that she faced in the bottom half of the inning.

The rally continued in the top of the sixth with a leadoff single to center field by Maddison Schofield. Following the first out of the inning, Alyssa Acuna gave the Dustdevils a 6-5 lead sending the 2-0 offering over the fence in left field for her first home run this season. LCU had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning but Melanie Lint struck out Courtney Medina looking to get out of a bases loaded jam.

TAMIU would stretch their lead to three with two more runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a pair of LCU miscues. Cannon led off with a single before moving over to second on her 12thstolen base of the season. The senior would come around to score on a throwing error on a grounder hit to the middle of the infield by Maya Paul. Paul would advance all the way to third on another error before coming around to score on a double by Schofield.

Carrion (1-2) earned her first career win going an inning in relief retiring all three batters she faced. Lint earned the save in two innings in relief allowing three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Lubbock Christian 4, TAMIU 0
The Dustdevils put two runners on in the second and fourth but were unable to open the scoring. The Lady Chaps scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth on four hits. Lindzi Clemmer homered to center field to give the home team a 2-0 lead. Morgan Dufour followed that up with a two-run double to make it 4-0 after six complete. TAMIU put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh but consecutive fielder's choice ended the rally.

Delainy Thompson (10-14) allowed four runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk with one strike out in six innings.
