LAREDO, Texas (April 16, 2018)- Lindsey Smith and
Melanie Gamboa took advantage of the windy conditions on Monday afternoon with each hitting a home run in Texas A&M International University's doubleheader header against No. 9 Angelo State at Dustdevil Field. Smith has now homered in two of her last three games while Gamboa connected on her first home runs since February as the Dustdevils dropped both games to the Rambelles.
The Dustdevils finish their 12-game home stand with a nonconference doubleheader against #13 West Texas A&M on Sunday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Links for live stats and video can be found on the softball schedule page at GoDustdevils.com.
Angelo State 15, TAMIU 11
The Rambelles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of two-run home runs. The Dustdevils got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from
Maya Paul after
Cassie Cannon led off with a double off the top of the fence in center. They looked prime to cut into the deficit in the second inning but were unable to score any runs after loading the bases with one out.
The deficit was 6-1 entering the bottom of the fourth when
Melanie Gamboa hit her second career home run.
Alyssa Soneff reached base for the second time of the game with a single to right field followed Gamboa's two-run home run on a 1-1 offering from ASU's Morgan Hill. The visitors responded with five runs of their own on five hits and two errors in the fifth to make it 11-3. The Dustdevils scored the run they needed in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Soneff to make it 11-4.
ASU's Taylor Fogle hit her second home run of the game in the top of the sixth, this time a three-run shot to make it 14-4. For the second time in as many innings, the Dustdevils needed to score runs to keep the game going and they did just that. Cannnon picked up her second double of the game to lead off the frame. Following two straight outs,
Maddison Schofield singled up the middle to plate Cannon.
Lindsey Smith would clear the bases when she took the 0-1 pitch over the fence in center field for her fifth home run of the season. The rally wasn't done as
Alyssa Acuna singled up the middle followed by a hit by pitch by
Brandi Giles.
Krystal Perez was inserted to pinch run for Acuna and would later score on an error following a walk by
Jenelle Rodriguez.
The Dustdevils offense continued to produce as they scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 15-11.
Samantha Edmiston reached on an error before stealing second during Paul's at-bat. Paul and Schofield would both walk to load the bases with no outs. Smith was credited with her third RBI of the game on the third walk of the inning making it a six run game. Acuna's fielder's choice plated Paul giving the Dustdevils 10 runs a in game for the first time since February 10.
Erika Sanchez would drive in the final run of the game with a deep fly out to centerfield.
Sara Caterson (2-7) went four innings allowing six runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while tying a career-high with six strikeouts.
Tori Carrion and
Miranda Martinez pitched combined for three innings of relief.
Angelo State 16, TAMIU 0 (6 innings)
Cannon single down the third base line in the bottom of the first was the Dustdevils lone hit of the game as the Rambelles hit five home runs in game two for the doubleheader sweep.
Maddison Schofield and
Amanda Davila also reached base as Schofield was hit by a pitch in the fifth and Davila walked on five pitches in the sixth.
Thompson (9-13) allowed a season-high seven runs (seven earned) on six hits and four walks with one strikeout.
Melanie Lint and Martinez pitched the final three innings in relief allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits.
