Caterson and Schofield Shine in Dustdevils' 7-1 Win over UC-Colorado Springs

CANYON, Texas (February 17, 2018) – Maddison Schofield drove in four runs as the Texas A&M International University softball split a pair of games on Saturday at the WTAMU Invitational at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. The Dustdevils pounded out 10 hits in a 7-1 victory over UC-Colorado Springs before falling to #13 West Texas A&M 3-2 in the night cap.
 
The Dustdevils will finish off tournament play tomorrow, Feb. 18, against UCCS at 10 a.m. at Schaeffer Park. A link for live stats can be found at GoDustdevils.com under the softball schedule page.
 
TAMIU 7, UC-Colorado Springs 1
The Mountain Lions got one run across in the top of the fourth following a one out double by Alex Cook. She would advance to third on a wild pitch before coming around to score when Taylor White grounded out to second base.
 
Cassie Cannon responded in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff triple followed by a single to the pitcher from Melania Gamboa putting runners on the corners with no outs. Maddison Schofield tied the game at 1-all with her single down the third base line plating Cannon. Lindsey Smith loaded the bases with no outs with a single of her own to right field. The bases would remain loaded after Gamboa was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice to second from Maya Paul. Schofield would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Acuna followed by a single to center from Erika Sanchez scored Smith giving the Dustdevils 3-1 after four complete.
 
The Dustdevils came close to adding more runs in the next inning after loading the bases with no outs but were unable to plate any runs on a pair of fielder's choice and a fly out to right field. It was Sara Caterson who saw herself in trouble in the top half of the next inning with two runners reaching base with one out before she got Kelly Kukla to pop up followed by a Saleem Quinonez ground out to end the threat.
 
Robi Kami started the bottom of the sixth off with a walk before moving over to second on a sac bunt from Sanchez. Pinch hitter Avianna Galvan singled through the right side before advancing to second on the throw putting runners on second and third with one out. Following the second out of the inning, UCCS had trouble with a ball hit from Sumer Woodson as Kami came around to score. Gamboa walked to load the bases with Schofield clearing the bases on the first pitch of the next at-bat to give the Dustdevils a commanding 7-1 lead.
 
Caterson (2-1) went the distance for the first time this season allowing one run on seven hits and three walks while striking out a season-high three.
 
West Texas A&M 3, TAMIU 2
The Dustdevils struck first in the top of the second on Brandi Giles' third home run of the season. Paul started the inning off with a single up the middle before she was out on a fielder's choice on a ball hit to short by Acuna. Edmiston took Acuna's spot at first on a fielder's choice followed by a two-out home run by Giles over the wall in left center making it 2-0 in favor of the Dustdevils. Delainy Thompson got on off a jam in the bottom half of the inning following a walk and throwing error putting runners on the corners with two outs. She got WT's Alyx Cordell to fly out to center to preserve the lead.
 
WT's Kourtney Coveney tripled to left with one out in the bottom of the fifth on a 0-2 pitch before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Hardin. Kylee Moore tied the game at 2-all at the next at-bat with her seventh home run of the season.
 
The Dustdevils were unable to respond in the top of the sixth as they went down in order for the fourth consecutive inning. Shanna McBroom scored the go ahead run in the bottom half of the inning after reaching on a leadoff double. She would move to third on a sac bunt before Suka Van Gurp's grounder to Acuna had enough on it to give WT a 3-2 lead.
 
Thompson (1-5) pitched one of her best games of the season holding WT to three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.
