LAREDO, Texas (February 3, 2018) – The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils recorded 10 or more hits in back-to-back games for the first time since April 2016 as they split a pair in day two of the TownePlace Suites by Marriot TAMIU Spring Classic. The Dustdevils dropped a 7-4 decision to Texas A&M-Kingsville before exploding for 10 unanswered runs in a 10-2 victory over the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma. The win improves their record to 1-3 on the season.
The Dustdevils finish opening weekend with a game against the Bronchos at 12:45 at Dustdevil Softball Field. Live stats and video will be provided.
Texas A&M-Kingsville 7, TAMIU 4
Melanie Lint sat down the Javelinas in order in the top of the first in her first career start for TAMIU including striking out the first batter she faced. TAMUK would score first in the top of the second with Haley Boyett coming around to score on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0.
The Dustdevils would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning after
Robi Kami walked on four straight pitches before scoring on a single from
Cassie Cannon. TAMIU would take a 2-1 lead in the next inning with
Erika Sanchez bringing home
Lindsey Smith on a ground out to the shortstop.
Brandi Giles connected on her first home run of the season to lead off the bottom half of the fourth making it 3-1. The Dustdevils added another run to make it 4-1 as Kami scored for the second time of the game on an error by the Javelinas on a hard hit by
Maddison Schofield.
The Javelinas would rally in the top of the sixth scoring six runs on six hits to take a 7-4 lead. TAMIU was unable to respond as they dropped their sixth straight to TAMUK.
Sara Caterson (0-1) was saddled with the loss giving up four runs on five hits striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.
TAMIU 10, Central Oklahoma 2
For the second time in as many days, the Bronchos jumped out to an early lead over the Dustdevils. Carrie Abrams got into scoring position with a one-out triple to right field before Morgan Heard homered in the next at-bat giving the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
The Dustdevils responded in the bottom half of the inning as Cannon was hit by a pitch followed by a single to right side from
Samantha Edmiston. Cannon came around to score after stealing third on a passed third strike for
Lindsey Smith. After a fielder's choice that saw Edmiston out at home, Giles walked to load the bases. Alyssa Acuña sliced a ball down the left side to plate two runners making it 3-2.
Alyssa Soneff, picked up a RBI in her first action of the season with a sac fly to left field to plate Giles.
Cannon started the bottom half of the second off with a single to center before stealing her second bag of the game. The Kingsville, Texas product came around to score on an error from UCO's Mo Selman on a ball hit by Edmiston.
Erika Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice putting runners on first and second with one out. Following the second out of the inning, Acuña's second hit in as many innings plated Edmiston making it 6-2 after two innings.
The Bronchos looked to get themselves back in the game in the top of the third on a pair of two-out hits putting runners on second and third but
Delainy Thompson got Carli Jones to pop up to Acuña to end the threat. Giles started the bottom half of the fourth reaching base on an error from Heard followed by back-to-back walks to Acuña and
Avianna Galvan. Pinch runner
Sarah Sandoval was called out at home on a fielder's choice before Summer Woodson drove in two runs with a single to left center. Woodson would advance to second on a passed ball giving TAMIU runners on second and third with one out. Cannon's double to right center plated pinch runner
Amanda Hinojosa to make it 9-4. Edmiston would plate the final run of the game with her second hit of the game making it 10-4 in favor of the home team.
Thompson (1-1) picker up her first win of the season going five inning allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three.
